Hands Off Our Pensions: Tell EDC Not to De-Risk LNG With Public Money
Export Development Canada (EDC) is a federal Crown corporation backed by taxpayer dollars. Its job is to support Canadian trade and investment. But EDC is considering acquiring an indirect stake in LNG Canada, the country’s largest LNG export project – a move that could help make risky LNG investments more attractive to public pension funds.
Pension funds are supposed to protect workers’ retirement savings through stable, long-term investments. Yet LNG projects face growing uncertainty. They are vulnerable to shifting energy markets, climate policy changes, legal challenges and disputes over Indigenous rights and consent. These are exactly the kinds of risks that pension funds should be avoiding when committing retirement savings.
EDC has not publicly disclosed how its LNG Canada investment would be structured. However, EDC’s financing programs show how taxpayer-backed capital can help make major infrastructure projects appear more attractive to private investors. By taking on risk during uncertain phases of development, improving financing conditions, or providing long-term “patient capital,” EDC can help transform projects that investors may otherwise avoid into assets that appear suitable for pension portfolios. This raises serious questions. Why is a taxpayer-backed Crown corporation helping prepare risky LNG projects for potential public pension investment? And how does supporting new fossil fuel infrastructure align with Canada’s climate obligations?
Canadians deserve transparency. If EDC is helping de-risk LNG projects for pension funds and other investors, it should publicly explain how these investments work, what risks are being transferred to the public, and how climate, legal and Indigenous rights risks are being assessed.

Danielle Smith wants to build a West Coast pipeline. We can’t afford another publicly funded pipeline that would fuel the climate crisis while enriching fossil fuel executives and foreign billionaires. It’s time to show the Carney government that this pipeline is not what the people of Canada want – not for our economy, our climate, or our futures.
Over the past 15 years, we have stood shoulder to shoulder with First Nations and environmental allies to stop pipelines and oil train projects that seemed inevitable. Together, action by action, we can build a mass movement to stop this one too.

The province of BC is cutting funding for local climate and wildfire preparedness programs and failing to implement critical flood mitigation strategies — at a time when climate impacts are intensifying. Tell the BC government to spend what is required to keep our communities safe from the increasing threats of climate change.
The Province must:
1. Reinstate and expand the Local Government Climate Action Program (LGCAP),
2. Fund implementation of the flood management strategy, and
3. Commit to long-term FireSmart funding

Protect Vancouver’s climate progress on buildings
For decades, Vancouver has been recognized as a leader in climate action and green buildings. That’s why it was so disappointing when City Council – despite massive public backlash – recently voted to weaken key climate policies and bring methane gas back into new buildings. We’re already seeing this rollback embolden fossil fuel lobbyists and undermine efforts by other municipalities working to reduce pollution and build cleaner, healthier homes.
Climate progress cannot depend on the politics of a single city hall. If we want lasting progress, senior governments must step up and provide clear, consistent leadership. And both the British Columbia and the federal government have the policy tools to do this and provide the climate-safe and affordable housing we need.
Will you send a letter to Vancouver’s MLAs and MPs and urge them to protect climate progress, accelerate clean buildings, and ensure that one municipal decision doesn’t set British Columbia backward?
Tell Carney: NO MORE PIPELINES
You can’t make this up. As a fossil-fueled climate change heatwave scorches communities across the country, Premier Danielle Smith just submitted a proposal for a $35 billion Alberta-to-the-West Coast pipeline to Carney’s Major Project Office.
It’s crystal clear: Smith wants to fast-track this project and wants the public dollars to buy it. And it makes no sense. While the rest of the world is moving towards renewable energy, Smith wants to hitch our wagon to a dying fossil fuel industry. We know it’s only going to line the pockets of foreign fossil fuel executives – while the rest of us pay for it.
It’s time to show the Carney government that this pipeline is not what the people of Canada want – not for our economy, our climate, or our futures. If we can generate enough public pressure and flood key decision-makers, we can stop this project before it starts.
